At first light it was chilly. I went for a constitutional and had to walk briskly until I got warm. By breakfast time the sun was out but in the shade it was still nippy. Now, at ten to three o it a stunning afternoon. Breezy, yes, but the sky is blue. I sitting with back agin some wooden pallets facing across the allotments and into the sun.
An important job in dry conditions at this juncture is preparing main crop potatoes for digging. This actually commenced some weeks ago with the ritual cuttingoffofthetops at the first signs of blight. Then I weeded through eleven ridgeandfurrow rows by hand to thoroughly clean the soil. Since then a fresh crop of wild pioneering plants has sprung into life and they need dealing with.
I just pull them up, roots and all, then lay on the surface to shrivel in the sun. Ideally you do this before seeds have set but the fact is that some of these weeds,[url=http://www.floware.fr]sac michael kors[/url], like speedwell and fat hen, can reproduce so rapidly that they beat me to it. I don worry too much, truth be told. Preventing weeds from seeding is socalled best practice but if you live in the real world then, like me, you fall short frequently. That cool. Just keep the hoe busy at all appropriate times and your soil be stirred enough to give vegetables suitable advantage. These days I less intolerant of undesirable vegetation than in years gone by and insects, if nothing else, appreciate the extra cover.
But back to spuds it comes to inserting a fork, levering up and lifting I like to work in clean soil. Then all focus can be turned to rootling around in the good earth for those prized possessions and not picking through a jungle of weeds as well. I think you find the whole experience more pleasurable this way and that, as much as anything else, is the point of gardening surely?
