school fires hockey coach over offensive bios in team program
HALIFAX A high school hockey coach has been told he won't be leading the Halifaxarea team next season after a parent complained about offensive material printed in the team's program, which the school's principal acknowledges is sexist and homophobic.
Many of the players' bios in the program for the Lockview High Dragons include sexually suggestive language or other offensive material.
For example, one makes a crude reference to a player's desire to visit pop singer Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch, while another says a team member will "drop his pants for a quick buck."
And while it wasn't clear who wrote the descriptions, Duncan said he believes volunteer coach Kevin Brown would have been the last person to see the program before it went to print.
"It should never have been printed, and in fact, as an educator, I'm concerned that anyone would not see clearly why this type of language is inappropriate," Duncan said during a news conference Wednesday.
"I want to apologize on behalf of Lockview High School for any and all hurt this may have caused."
Attempts to reach Brown, who had coached the team for two years, were unsuccessful.
Duncan said he spoke with Brown and the players' parents, louis vuitton paris, and planned to talk to the team later Wednesday. He said the program was only brought to his attention Monday, and he was still trying to figure out exactly what happened.
The school planned to review its policies to ensure such materials are vetted by the school's administration in the future, and Duncan said the team will participate in activities focusing on diversity but didn't offer specifics.
"This unfortunate incident is a good teachable moment that those involved and those observing can learn that our words, what we say, even how we say it, is extremely important," he said.
"The students and staff and volunteers at Lockview High School . are extremely conscientious and this is not indicative of the students at our school and of this team."
He said there might be consequences for team members if they are found to be responsible for the content.
About 200 copies of the program were printed. They were distributed at the team's final game of the season on Sunday, and also during the team's previous home game on Feb. 14, said Duncan.
